Head here for an All-Stars preview, and make sure to test all week again to see the contenders as they’re announced!
The sensationally styled Jaguar I-Pace is no electron-powered curiosity. Sure, it has a battery p.C. And electric-powered automobiles, and you refuel it by jamming a plug into one fender. Still, this wedge-y crossover aspect transcends the EV niche as a motive force-targeted automobile with an astounding quantity of athleticism.
We didn’t place the I-Pace on the racetrack to maintain its fee, but its dynamic virtues became clear on the sinewy roads of our excessive-barren region test direction. There’s a big grip available, and the sensation of balance is enhanced by the heavy battery % being hooked up to the ground. Excellent damping can provide a sporty ride; however, in no way punishing even on big wheels and playing against type, the electric steering transmits real, actual avenue textures to your fingertips.
“It’s difficult now not to be inspired by the polish of the I-Pace, and to assume they’ve beaten the Germans to the punch so convincingly is tremendous,” contributor Jethro Bovingdon said. Detroit editor Todd Lassa concurred: “It drives like a Jaguar must smooth and with crisp handling and masses of on-the-spot torque.” Executive editor Mac Morrison said, “I’d love to power this vehicle daily for a year. Electric force aside, this is what I was hoping the F-Pace might be.”
The I-Pace is likewise an extraordinary luxury car. The interior is simple and uncluttered, “eschewing today’s carbon fiber and quilted upholstery,” in the words of contributor Ronald Ahrens, with secure seats, awesome forward sightlines, and without problems decipherable controls and readouts. And once you shut off the gimmicky fake spaceship sounds, it’s wholly serene while you unharness the electric fury of 394 horsepower and 512 lb-toes of torque. Fully charged, the I-Pace gives as much as 234 miles of range, enough to handle the day-by-day grind without the need to discover a plug.
Given the above, you may wonder why Jaguar’s first-ever EV didn’t make our remaining winner’s circle. It boiled all the way down to this: Many of us couldn’t drive the I-Pace long enough to behavior a proper assessment. There have been no fast chargers close to checking out the place, which intended a full price to take nearly an entire day. In addition, a plastic pin within the charging connector became damaged and prevented the I-Pace from engaging in its price mode dependably. We’d be remiss if we didn’t also point out the lesser sin of the infotainment device: it’s buggy, temperamental, and gradual to react even if it works properly.
Still, one of these nicely rounded EVs comes from a once cool organization. Its flagship sedan has looked the same for four decades but is nothing quick or amazing. It’s a disgrace we couldn’t spend extra high-quality time with the I-Pace because it truly is one of the fine vehicles on sale today—electric or not.
